A backyard green is one of the more satisfying features we build, and one of the easiest to build badly. The failure mode is simple: a flat piece of synthetic turf that putts nothing like a real green, laid over a base that settles into low spots within two seasons. What makes a green play well

• Shaped base contour — real breaks and slopes, built into the base before any turf goes down. Flat greens are boring after a week.
• Proper green speed from turf selection and infill, so it matches how you actually want to practise.
• Consistent roll, which comes from meticulous base compaction. Any soft spot becomes a dead spot.
• Cup placement planned for varied practice distances and breaks.
• Fringe and approach turf at a different pile height so chip and pitch shots behave correctly.
• Drainage through the base so the green is playable rather than saturated.

Add the short game, not just the putting

The greens that get used most are the ones with a chipping approach. A green surrounded only by lawn limits you to putting; a green with a fringe, a rough-height surround, and a few yards of approach lets you practise the shots that actually cost strokes. Bunkers, whether real sand or synthetic, are a further step and worth discussing at design. This is the difference between a novelty and something you use several times a week.

Base and drainage in this climate

Greens are built on the same engineering principles as any other synthetic surface, with tighter tolerances. Excavation to depth, aggregate installed and compacted in lifts, contour shaped and compacted into the base, drainage designed so water moves through and away, and edge restraint that holds the perimeter. In a freeze-thaw climate, water trapped under the surface heaves it — and on a putting surface even minor heaving is immediately obvious because it changes how the ball rolls.

Siting

Consider sun and shade — synthetic turf in full afternoon sun gets hot. Consider trees, because a green under deciduous cover means constant debris and a green under conifers collects needles that are tedious to clear. Consider where errant chip shots go, and what is behind the green. And consider snow: greens can be cleared, but the surface should be sited so that clearing is practical and so meltwater has somewhere to go.

What drives the cost

Cost intent is high on this service. The honest drivers are: total square footage, how much contour shaping the design calls for — a genuinely undulating green takes considerably more base work than a gentle one — the turf system selected, number of cups, whether fringe and approach areas are included, bunkers, drainage requirements, excavation and site access, and any retaining or grade work the location needs.
