Here is the argument for landscape lighting in this region: from late autumn through early spring, most people arrive home after dark and leave before full light. Without lighting, you own a landscape you cannot see for a third of the year. Good lighting doubles the hours your investment is visible — and it is one of the least expensive elements relative to its effect. Light the effect, not the fixture

The most common mistake is lighting things instead of composing a scene — a fixture at every plant, all the same, all at full brightness. Good design works with contrast: bright and dim, lit and unlit. It hides the source and shows the effect. It varies intensity so the eye moves through the space rather than being met with an even wall of light. And it respects the fact that in a place with genuinely dark night skies, less light is often more effective — both aesthetically and for your neighbours.

The technical side that determines longevity

Most residential landscape lighting is low voltage, which is safer and more flexible than line voltage. What separates a system that works for fifteen years from one that fails in three: correctly sized transformers with capacity to spare, wire gauge appropriate to run length so distant fixtures are not dim, properly buried and protected runs, waterproof connections rather than the twist-on caps that corrode, and fixtures rated for burial and freeze-thaw. Running lighting conduit and wire during hardscape construction rather than retrofitting later is dramatically cheaper and looks better.

Snow, ice, and North Idaho reality

Fixtures need siting where snow removal will not destroy them and where drifting will not bury them by January. Path lights along a route that gets plowed or shoveled need particular thought. And fixtures set at grade in areas that collect meltwater and refreeze take a beating — mounting height and drainage around fixtures matter here in ways they do not in milder climates.

What drives the cost

Fixture count is the obvious factor, but fixture quality varies enormously and is what determines whether you are replacing the system in five years — cast brass and copper versus thin aluminium is a real difference in this climate. Beyond that: transformer capacity, total wire run length, whether trenching is through finished landscape or open construction, controls and zoning, and whether any line-voltage work is involved.
